Decisive Element

Remember you are the decisive element...

In everything you touch, in your footprints and most importantly, in your words; you contribute tiny molecules of your spirit.

As you read this, I wonder what it brings to mind.  Maybe it sounds conceited.  Maybe it sounds like I’m full of myself and "maybe narcissistic."  But what if it is just meant as an encouragement to own your power?

This is the first line from a quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a seventeenth century German writer whose works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, and science.

In our gentle yoga class on Tuesday nights, I am always amazed by how the students are affected by the class.  My favorite moment is just as class is ending, as I look around and see the peaceful faces smiling, with their eyes gently closed. I know they have remembered how to be kind to themselves, something we Americans all too often forget.  At the end of class I often give my students an Invitation, something to ponder in the coming week and a way to take away some of our class time home with them.

This week my invitation was: “Remember that you are the decisive element.”

How does it make you feel to know that everywhere you go today, you are leaving bits and pieces of your energy behind? In everything you touch, in your footprints and most importantly, in your words: you contribute tiny molecules of your spirit.  Anywhere you are today won’t be the same after you leave, and won’t be the same as it would have been had you not shown up.

I think so many times (perhaps this is another learned American trait?) we feel like life happens to us, and we forget that we play an equal part in our life experience. I find that we play the same card over and over, forgetting that we have 51 others to choose from! So this week, I invite you to play an equal part in your life, try one of the other 51 cards and remember that you are the decisive element.
