Hamster Wheel
Maybe we need to remind ourselves about the general law of physics...
With a little mindfulness and a little practice, who knows, maybe we can put a Barcalounger on that wheel of yours!
I find myself wondering lately where all these "hamster wheels" came from. I know I have one. In fact most of the people I know are on one type of hamster wheel or another. Were we all dragged, kicking and screaming onto our wheels or did we go
willingly? Or was it so gradual that we didn't notice until it was too
late and the proverbial wheel was already in motion?
I feel that a certain amount of activity is healthy, wonderful and necessary! I feel the times we will remember in our old age will be from active experiences we've had, not from our Tues afternoon naps. (However, this is an ongoing debate I have with
myself because naps are such a treat, how can I not remember them!?)
Maybe we need to remind ourselves about the general law of physics, "a
body at rest tends to stay at rest, a body in motion tends to stay in motion." I always thought they were talking about a rock, but why would this law apply any differently to our physical body? The truth is it wouldn't.
The only tool we have against this universal law? Our mind. Yup, that's it. I wish there were some sort of lever, or braking system I could offer everyone,
but there's not. The only thing we have control over is our own actions
and our only tool with which to do that is our mind.
So this week, let's use that tool. Watch our activities - and make each one of them a conscious decision. Remember
our tendency to "stay in motion" or "stay at rest" and remind ourselves that there can be a flow back and forth between the two. With a little
mindfulness and a little practice, who knows, maybe we can put a Barcalounger on that wheel of yours!
